Thank you for all your nominees for the STA 12 Days of Christmas Campaign, here is a list of all the nominations. 

Over the last couple of weeks we have received an influx of  'good guy' nominations to thank tourism superstars for their hard work during 2017. It was a difficult task to pick the winners of the fantastic prizes offered by our generous elves as all of our 'good guys' deserve to be recognised for their hard work, so here is the 2017 STA 12 Days of Christmas 'nice list'.

Andrew is a very valuable member of our team and always turns up to greet tourists in his tartan trousers at Edinburgh Airport.  He always goes out his way to help despite having had a tough year outside of work with personal problems.



Aberdeenshire Council bridges manager

Donald has a passion for bridges and Scotland  in his spare time organised Aberdeenshire bridge tour and 500 north east tour for Aberdeenshire.  An unsung hero   Even on holidays he’s searching out ideas and checking routes around bridges. His passion is also Scottish history.



Wanlockhead Museum Trust - Visitor Services Officer

Margaret has worked tirelessly for the last 3 years to drive the recovery of museum from difficult times. Being the only member of full-time staff, M carries the full weight of the operation and never claims payment for all the hours that she works. Her voluntary hours must equate to double her paid hours. M always welcomes our visitors and attends to any complaints without delay. M is a very modest person and always puts everyone else first. She really is a pillar of our small community. We would be lost without you M!



Applecross Inn  Business Development Manager

Anne has made a vast difference to the management of our business over the past two years, her contribution to make behind the scenes run smoothly and efficiently to all the teams benefit has been exceptional.

Daily the amount of record keeping, training ,HR ,social media and keeping up with current trends and progress is vitally important in a hands on business. We truly appreciate her skills and assistance  provided by her role.

She has developed our website, new booking system online soon, keeps all procedures up to date and is constantly attempting to improve our service on all levels for customers, staff and management, we thank her.

However did we manage beforehand, this was a newly created role to develop our business.



Wyvis B &B  -- IT manager /Mr Fixit

Terry , took up his position here at Wyvis when he retired from his day job 6 yrs ago ! He has been truly amazing helping me run Wyvis our 5star Gold B&B here in Tillicoultry . He sees to all the technical things . Emails , web , FB , Twitter and of course helps with Breafasts and generally looks after the guests. Without his help and dedication Wyvis would not be so successful . He deserves a big Thank You !

Sheila works tireless for Arran and her enthusiasm never wavers. She’s a 7 day a week 365 days, full on, dedicated advocate for our Island.

Steven is a supportive and extremely helpful influence not only within our restaurant and shop but in general on site.

Having good quality clean linen is paramount to the ease of setting up our space as well as the enjoyment of our clients. Blairs deliver a fantastic product under very stressful circumstances. I just want their whole team to realise how grateful we are for being there.




I'm nominating Colin as he always goes the extra mile, nothing is too much trouble for him.  I struggle with walking and on dark, windy or icy nights he'll come and get me at the office and walk me to my car. If I need any errands doing he's always first to offer.  He's just a lovely guy :)



Volunteer at The Scottish Crannog Centre

Thank you for volunteering for all our special events throughout the season.  Assisting with a smile  and bringing enjoyment and fun to visitors as well as staff!  Diana always goes that little bit further to help and is a valued volunteer here at The Scottish Crannog Centre.



Maintenance Assistant

Garry Brown is an amazing asset to the theatre, since he joined us 18 months ago he has single handed replaced 0ver 600 lamps and fittings to LED saving over £12,000 per year. he is always looking at ways to improve the services we offer our visitors and nothing is ever too much trouble. He can turn his hand to most things.  Garry is on the Green team, Health & Safety committee and also the social group so gets involved with a huge range of activities. He is passionate about the work he does and the work produced is always excellent.

Glen Tanar Estate, Caretaker

Elma has been looking after our 7 holiday cottages mostly by herself for the number of years.  She does a great job getting them ready for our guests.  She deserves a thank you for all her hard work and dedication.



Secretary of the Volunteers (just stood down)

Wendy Auld is a community person, and has been one of the Welcome Volunteers on Hawes Pier (all weathers), South Queensferry, since 2013. For the last 3 years she has been the group Secretary, tirelessly encouraging others, supporting the team on cruise days, concerning herself that everything is in order. She manages new members, and also uncomplainingly does the bureaucratic admin too. Well worthy of recognition.



Howgate Shopping Centre, Customer Service

Suzanne provides an amazing customer experience and is also fantastic with the staff who work within the centre. She is on hand to offer assistance with any query but also looks for people who may need help but are afraid to ask. From providing free wheelchair hire, assisting customers with disabilities (hidden or visible) entertaining children, organising fun events through to providing first aid and helping with security - she does everything with a smile on her face ensuring people want to come back to the centre.



Events Executive at VisitScotland

On 14th November 2017, Lesley celebrated a monumental 40th anniversary at VisitScotland. Working through several teams and being instrumental in the inception of the Events & Exhibitions team, Lesley is a well-known presence in the Scottish tourism industry and has delivered countless top quality events during her career to date, including; managing hospitality at the Ryder Cup and The Open, VisitScotland Expo and Scottish Thistle Awards. A great sounding board and font of knowledge, Lesley is always willing to support and guide the rest of the team to keep us right!



Senior Marketing Coordinator

Pam has worked extremely hard in marketing our Edinburgh Running Tours this year for the first time. She's always going the extra mile and coming up with fab ideas, and is very deserving of a Christmas gift!



Glasgow artist - @JoSunshineArt

I "met" @JoSunshineArt on Twitter. Her bright happy drawings made me feel good. She depicts Scotland and its personality without credit. Her drawings cover live news stories, places,  events. Glasgow buildings, parks, concerts, football matches, nature people and more in fun bright colours. Always positive.  She drew many of the BLiSS trail sculptures after seeing the photos. I commissioned her to draw Bill Bull. She subsidised the cost on discovering it was a gift to the Ripple Retreat. Jo gave up her Big Issue vending position to fund her way as a Glasgow artist. She is visually impaired with partial site in one eye and draws in A1 size black paper with neon crayons. She can't see her finished work! She sells through Etsy and Facebook spending £50 per fortnight on crayons. Glasgow council gave her an exhibition and she was commissioned to "wall paper" the Big Issue office with her happy work recently. I would love to meet Jo one day and thank her for brightening the lives of many people. I dont know her email but she can be reached on Twitter and Facebook. Please read Jo unwittingly aids #ScotSpirit tourism. Maybe VisitScotland could work with her



Housekeeper and right hand woman

Martine is our star. She has had a really rough year personally but always manages to keep a smile on her face and never complains.  She keeps our property immaculate, sets the dining table for guests like royalty are coming and does anything that is required to pull off a first class event.  All while dealing with a frail parent 4 hours drive away that she never fails to visit ever week. We appreciate her so much she deserves a little virtual hug.



Senior Events Officer

Lyndy goes the extra mile every day. She delivers to tight and ever changing deadlines. Her work rate is phenomenal. She is diligent and compassionate. She delivers great events for all ages and is passionate about what she does.

I am very proud to have her on my team.



Operations Manager, Re-Union Canal Boats

Richard has co-ordinated a team of 40 local volunteers to move up to 8 boats per day from lock 2 at the Kelpies to lock 20 at Banknock on the Forth & Clyde Canal between the hours of 8am and 6pm, 7 days per week. These boats include yachts and holiday barge hires meeting canal users and lovers from across the world. His team have received consistently high praise and feedback on safety and customer service with each volunteer traines as a canal ambassador selling the benefits of Falkirk, where to shop, where to eat and where to visit. This has been the busiest year to date for visitors to the canal and to be able to recruit, train and sustain local people to volunteer and become one with our historical monuments which we proudly operate is no mean feat. Thank you Richard from boaters across the world who loved visiting Falkirk and from the volunteers living in Falkirk who have benefited physically emotionally and mentally from being a part of your team.



Membership Secretary ASSC

Eleanor is the beating heart of ASSC dealing with all aspects of the administration of a 600 plus strong association. From the challenges of maintaining a website, to updating listings and handling trade enquiries Eleanor’s skill set is wide and varied and her ability to multitask is recognised and admired by the board and CEO. She maintains a cheery and positive outlook and gives each member her full attention and commitment whether an agency with multiple properties or a lifestyle business with a single holiday cottage. She’s seen the Association grow and develop into the cooperative company that it is today and remains cool in a crisis and gets the job done. Her job title may be Membership Secretary, but Eleanor is so much more and we’d love to see her gain public recognition for the work she does.

Highland Campervans - Hospitality Co-ordinator

Jo hired me in April and has given me a great welcome into the industry. Her enthusiasm, friendliness and professionalism is a fantastic example to follow, and our return customers are testament to this. Her dedication to the business and to help customers have a fantastic holiday is exemplary. She is also committed to educating and informing other sectors of the  industry about the positives in motor-homing and the simple amenities required by responsible campervanners. I look forward to next year's season with her and hope to follow in her footsteps!



Townhead Hotel Deputy Manager

Holly has thrown herself into everything possible this year. With management courses through HIT Scotland and ITC Training she has became an inspirational leader within the hotel team, and her encouragement has attracted other team members into training. Her smile and dedication is infectious and she is a real asset to our team her.

They all said more or less the same, that you had made their holiday something very special and become a friend in the process. People 1st - Commercial Projects and Qualifications Co-ordinator

For over 15 years Lorraine has consistently been on top of all administration for Modern apprenticeship qualification projects as well as contributing to everything and anything that is delegated to her. She has always been a huge support to me as well as the Scotland team and we are all very lucky to have her within the organisation.  The number of years given to People 1st show complete commitment and what an absolute star she is.  Lorraine deserves to know how valued she really is.

Joanna works tirelessly to promote not only Attadale Gardens but the Lochcarron area in general. She has helped to put this part of the Highlands on the tourist map, and the number of visitors has increased dramatically. She leads a very busy working life, largely unpaid, and deserves a pat on the back.

ETAG - Edinburgh Tourism Action Group

Gillian has been a fantastic person to work with over the last year.  

  She is resourceful and full of ideas, highly efficient and accurate - one of the few people I never have to chase about anything!  She does what she says she will and has an obvious passion for growing tourism in the city.  Finally, she's got a heck of a lot on her plate, but makes light of it.  Thanks Gillian!



Chairman of VisitArran, Farmer and all round good guy

Kenny's dedication to VisitArran is fabulous.  He works away very quietly, is a great support to me in my role and is definitely one of the unsung heroes of our tourism industry here on Arran.  

As well as being a hardworking  farmer, Kenny is a successful businessman,  Chair of the Arran Trust, sits on Arran Economic Group, Arran Access Trust, Arran Farmers' Society and the Rotary, and probably many more community groups that I don't know about - but which all go to make Arran's great destination package. 

He deserves recognition for all his efforts, and will be mortified to know I've nominated him, but if he won one of the 12 days of Christmas it would be very well deserved! ! Cheers Kenny!



Head Housekeeper at Mackays Hotel

Christine has worked with us for over 10 years and works tirelessly to make sure our hotel and apartments are amazingly clean! As if that wasn't enough, Christine comes up with ideas for decorating the hotel events, making these herself sometimes!  At Christmas Christine goes the extra miles spending days putting up our decorations and making the hotel looks wonderful.  Christine is our very own star!

Laurie always goes the extra mile for the tourism businesses in Moray Speyside.  He has just run a fantastic conference bringing top quality speakers to the NE.  His energy and enthusiasm produces results!



Sales & Marketing Manager, In Your Element

2017 has been a mammoth year for our business. Calum took the lead on a big project which involved a complete name change, re-brand and new website, which entailed working long long hours without a grumble.  At the same time we won a number of new contracts/partnerships which meant opening two new locations and a 33% increase in annual turnover.

Throughout the mayhem and challenges of all the changes in 2017 Calum has been a steady and reliable star, bringing in big projects on time and on budget whilst managing to do his day job and remain calm and good humoured.

Project Manager Midlothian & Borders Tourism Action Group

Jemma has used innovative approaches in her work as a project manager to promote the Lothian and Borders , she has organised and facilitated several fam trips and organised events for tourism businesses from the Scottish Borders and Midlothian to attend to hear what has been done in Edinburgh, what we need to do in our 2 regions and what simple changes you as businesses need to make in order to tap into the growing  youth / student market. Jemma is very approachable and her positive attitude is always appreciated.



Mark Heirs Chef

As a Springboard Ambassador Mark has done an amazing job this year in helping us with our FutureChef programme.  He has delivered chef demos for over 2400 pupils across the forth valley, gone into class and coached the young peoples meal for school heat, judged school heats, local finals and mentoring.  Through his contacts he has sourced work experience in various restaurants for the budding new chefs and in total worked intensively for about 3 months time.  Young people have been writing to him who love the industry now.  He's has simply been amazing!!  We need more Springboard Ambassadors like Mark! Thanks from all of us at Springboard!

Although Alex is my hubby, he works alongside me here at Glentruim Estate as the Grounds and Maintenance Manager, but he is always on hand to go the extra mile to greet guests, make them very welcome, keep the estate immaculate and the squirrels fed, as well as being a fantastic help during weddings and events.  I could not do it without him!

Dawn to dusk organising group

In Rannoch it's hard to single out one person who makes tourism go with a buzz as its always a team effort. Can we recognise the "Dawn to Dusk" team who worked incredibly hard to put on our very first outdoors event celebrating our fantastic open spaces and promoting tourism activities in the area? They will be happy to get a mention if not a prize although that is always lovely.

The team of hosted a "Dawn to Dusk" day of activities and food for locals and visitors to the area including guided walks, crafting tents, geocaching, talking books at Carie Woods on the edge of Loch Rannoch. No detail was forgotten including ordering sunshine and dry weather! Food and hot drinks were on the go the whole day - no mean feat when there is no electricity or running water. 

The day was a huge success with many visitors from outwith the local area coming along to explore nature's best and strengthening the message that Rannoch is an all year round, outdoor destination for our local tourism agenda.

The core team of leaders included Carol MacEachan, Margie Wilkinson, Elspeth Paul,  Anne Benson, Sandy Fraser and Pam Whittaker.

Elizabeth has been working hard to support social enterprises in Glasgow to develop tourism offers.  Developing training opportunities, networking events, one to one business support, and attracting external support and partnerships. Without Elizabeth's hard work and dedication the social enterprises in the city would not be engaged in the city tourism agenda.
