Job Vacancy - Destination Orkney Chief Executive Officer

Tourism is a vital part of the economy, social fabric and cultural development of the Orkney islands. Approximately 250,000 visitors contribute some £31m spend annually helping to generate jobs and wealth while experiencing the very best of our island hospitality.

Can you now provide inclusive, determined and sensitive leadership to the Destination Orkney strategic partnership, board and staff, setting Orkney on the path to its new vision for tourism?

Established in 2005 as the industry group for Orkney’s tourism sector, Orkney Tourism Group, with over 500 business members, recently changed its name to Destination Orkney, reflecting its role at the heart of a new and ambitious tourism partnership. We are seeking a suitably experienced and motivated individual to take on an exciting and challenging new role as Chief Executive.

Destination Orkney is a new partnership-based destination marketing, management and membership approach to tourism in Orkney. The principal partners are the industry group, , Orkney Islands Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, VisitScotland and Historic Environment Scotland.

Strategic direction will be given by a senior partnership group. Implementation will be through the Destination Orkney board to which the CEO will report.

The CEO post is a new one, funded jointly by Destination Orkney, Orkney Islands Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and LEADER. The initial funding comes to an end at the conclusion of the LEADER program, but the partnership’s intention is that this is a permanent post and that alternative sources of funding will be in place by that time.

The CEO will be responsible for a number of activities including:

· Strategy development, planning and reporting

· Relationship management

· Team management and leadership

· Operational management

As such, candidates should have a passion for responsible tourism, exceptional leadership qualities, financial acumen and campaign and project planning skills.

The post, which will be for an initial period to June 2020 attracts a salary of £45,000 pa.
