Letter sent on behalf of Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive, Edinburgh Airport Ltd.
15 March 2018
We wanted the ETAG community to be one of the first to hear the fantastic news that we have succeeded in our collective mission to secure Scotland’s first ever direct link with China. Earlier this morning, we had the great pleasure to confirm that Hainan Airlines will start flying from Beijing to Edinburgh from June this year.
I truly believe that this new direct air link will create a step change in the scale and value of the Chinese inbound visitor market, creating a hugely valuable opportunity not only for Edinburgh’s tourism sector, but the wider Scottish economy.
At the ETAG 2015 Conference, when I shared Edinburgh Airport’s ambition to secure a direct Chinese air route and set the challenge to Edinburgh’s tourism sector to support us by becoming “China Ready”, I really had no idea of the extent to which the industry would so actively and successfully embrace this challenge.
Since then, I have been overwhelmed by the response. Led by the comprehensive China-Ready programme developed by ETAG and funded by Scottish Enterprise, over 250 local businesses have participated in China related activity to date.
The city’s enthusiastic drive to become China-Ready has played a critical role in Edinburgh Airport’s ability to develop a compelling and competitive business case to airlines for a direct air route and I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved for your commitment and support.
We will work closely with ETAG to provide businesses with as much briefing, support and planning information as possible before the service commences and look forward to providing a further update in the near future
Until then, thank you once again for your support and I hope you will join me in proudly welcoming today’s exciting announcement.
