Now recruiting for a Marine Tourism Project Manager

Fixed term, 3 Year position

Tourism Scotland 2020 sets the ambition to grow the value of Scottish tourism by at least £1billion by

2020. An identified key strand of the strategy is to maximize the growth potential of recreational Marine

Tourism in Scotland. Representatives from across the Scottish marine sector; British Marine Federation,

Sail Scotland, Royal Yachting Association and Scottish Canals, along with colleagues from VisitScotland,

SDI, and HIE make up Scottish Marine Tourism Development Group (SMTDG). The group works directly

with the Scottish Tourism Alliance (STA) to drive this important strand.

Following the successful launch of the Marine Tourism Strategy “Awakening the Giant” in March this year

the STA now wish to appoint a Marine Tourism Project Manager to work with the SMTDG to drive forward

the effective delivery of the action plan.

Primary Role

To facilitate, co-ordinate and support the strategic delivery, by industry and public sector partners that

make up the MTDG, of the Scottish Marine Tourism Strategy and prioritised Action Plan;

• Provide strategic guidance to the SMTDG to finalise the Action Plan process and, progress the

development of an effective monitoring and reporting framework

• Represent and promote an increased awareness of the role, function and priorities of SMTDG

partners at Industry events and meetings as required

• Provide effective co-ordination of communications to Industry, public sector and key

stakeholders to increase opportunities for alignment of wider activity to deliver Marine Strategy

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

 Manage all SMTDG meetings ensuring effective progress of action plan activity by members of


 Provide strategic support to members of SMTDG;

 Facilitate and influence engagement with key stakeholders to encourage participation in strategy

including Local Authorities’, Destination Management Organisations’ and wider Sector Groups;

 Participate, when required in meetings and forums’ that require SMTDG representation;

 Provide strategic guidance and input to MTDG communications plan, and where relevant

undertake communications tasks such as responding to media enquiries;

 Provide strategic guidance and insights to emerging projects where members of SMTDG have key

delivery role;

Key Skills and Experience

 Experience of Working in tourism or Tourism Related sector and a demonstrable knowledge of

the tourism sector in Scotland, including Key public agencies and Industry Groups

 Ability to think and act Strategically and to influence a senior level both public sector and privatesector

 Stakeholder relationship experience and ability to relationships on shared strategic priorities

 Excellent communications skills

 Ability to operate and manage within a complex organisational partnership environment to

deliver strategic priorities

 Proven leadership skills and ability to co-ordinate, influence and challenger stakeholders

Desirable Criteria

Some practical experience of the Marine Tourism environment

The post holder will be employed by the STA but direct line management to the MTDG nominated

representative. Strategic direction will also be given by the STA CEO, and the TS2020 National Strategy Co-coordinator.

Location: This is a field based /home working role but with use of the STA Offices and facilities in The OldTown Jail, Stirling. There will also be 2.5 days secretariat support per month for the project manager

provided by a STA team member based in the Old Town Jail

Contract: Fixed term, 36 months from appointment – (c15-20 days per year)

Fee guideline: £300 per day + expenses.
