Stephen Leckie the Chair of Scottish Tourism Alliance today pledged the organisations support of the STV Appeal at this year’s Scottish Tourism Week Signature conference in Glasgow.

He invited the hospitality and tourism business and organisations to get behind the Appeal and show their support by raising monies for this worthy cause over the coming months. Fundraising for the Appeal commenced over the course of Scottish Tourism Week (3 – 5 March) and will continue throughout the year at a number of Scottish Tourism Alliance events.

Welcoming the move as he opened the Scottish Tourism Week Annual Conference, Deputy First Minister John Swinney said:

“I am delighted the STA is supporting the STV Appeal. The Scottish Government has been involved since 2011, contributing £3.6 million in match funding, and I have seen for myself how this Appeal makes a real difference to the lives of young people. Every single penny raised stays in Scotland and goes directly to those young people who most need it.

“It is absolutely disgraceful that any children in Scotland live in poverty and we must do all that we can help those in need. This Appeal provides practical help like food and warm clothes; creating opportunities for training and employability for young people across Scotland.”

Scottish Tourism Week is organised by the Scottish Tourism Alliance, which was established in 1998 to act as the ‘voice of the tourism industry in Scotland’.

Marc Crothall, CEO of the Scottish Tourism Alliance echoed his Chair’s comments saying:

“Tourism in Scotland supports more than one in 10 of the country’s jobs.  With such a wide-ranging workforce, support from the Scottish tourism industry for this worthy charity could make a real difference.  The STV Appeal provides distributed to provide practical help like food and warm clothes, which is particularly relevant as we celebrate the Year of Food and Drink.  We’re actively encouraging our members to get behind this and look forward to working closely with the STV Appeal”.

Elizabeth Partyka of the STV Appeal said:

“We are thrilled that the Scottish Tourism Alliance is supporting the STV Appeal.  Since launch in 2011, the STV Appeal has raised over £8.2 million to support over 37,000 children with 297 big and small grants distributed to projects across all 32 local authority areas in Scotland.  With the support of the Scottish Tourism Alliance and our partners we hope to help even more children living in poverty.”

The announcement was made at the annual Scottish Tourism Week Conference.  Taking place across the SECC and Crowne Plaza Hotel, the conference annually attracts over 500 decision makers from hotels, restaurants, visitor attractions, tour operators, transport operators, banks, local authorities and key public agencies are expected to attend to network and discover the latest in the world of tourism from influential speakers.

Organised by the Scottish Tourism Alliance, the conference is part of Scottish Tourism Week’s Signature Programme, which will run from 3 to 5 March and includes six must-attend event for industry insiders. Details of the conference can be found at scottishtourismalliance.co.uk/stw2015/.
