STA Activity – September

STA Activity – September 

2019 continues to be a busy year for the STA in terms of the our remit around representation and advocacy.  The current political and economic landscape has required the STA to become active on a number of new issues which affect the growth and sustainability of Scotland’s tourism industry in addition to the work it currently does in influencing governments and policy makers on the existing barriers to growth.

Over the last few weeks the STA has:

  • Contributed to the Scottish Government Short Term Lets Consultation
  • Contributed to the Barclay Implementation: A consultation on non-domestic rates reform
  • Given evidence at Scottish Parliament Finance and Constitution Committee Meeting on the subject of the Non-Domestic Rates (Scotland) Bill
  • Input recommendations to the Tourism Sector Deal
  • Met with Transport Scotland Head of Strategy to raise awareness of development of the new Tourism Strategy and amplify the importance of joined up Tourism/Transport agenda.
  • Submitted a document with the key asks for Scotland’s tourism industry to Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs
  • Attended Tourism Skills Group meeting
  • Attended Growth Fund Panel meeting
  • Attended Year of Coast & Water 2020 meeting
  • Engagement with our counterparts at the Northern Irish Tourism Association and Irish Tourism Industry Confederation

Over the next few weeks the STA will:

·         Meet with Alister Jack MP, the new Secretary of State for Scotland

·         Meet with Kate Forbes MSP, Minister for Public Finance and Digital Economy at a Scottish trade associations’ roundtable meeting on taxation

·         Welcome Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs to meet with the STA Board to offer an update on the Scottish Government’s response to our key asks for industry

·         Attend a roundtable meeting, chaired by Derek Mackay MSP Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Economy and Fair Work, with stakeholders representing aviation, tourism and business organisations to hear about the Scottish Government’s policies to promote international connectivity and to provide views on what more the Scottish Government can do in this space.

·         Meet with the STA Council to finalise the proposed content of the STA’s Policy Agenda for the 2012-25 Scottish Government.
