Business survey – low carbon transport in tourism

The Energy Saving Trust are conducting a research project, funded by Transport Scotland, focusing on low carbon transport in tourism.

The tourism sector is an important part of the Scottish economy, supporting 207,000 jobs (8% of Scottish employment). In recent years tourist driving routes such as the North Coast 500 (NC500) in the Highlands have been particularly successful at attracting additional visitors. In its first year of operation, for example, the NC500 brought 29,000 additional visitors and £9 million into the Highland economy. The Scottish Government aims to protect and enhance Scotland’s natural assets, whilst at the same time, maximise the economic opportunities presented by these assets through tourism. Supporting low carbon transport in tourism, through the development of widespread charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, is one strategy to achieve this.
