On Friday 10 January 2020, Mollie Hughes, the Edinburgh-based adventurer and motivational speaker became the youngest woman in the world to ski solo from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole. She was 29 at the time.
Overcoming weeklong whiteouts, storm-force winds and temperatures of minus 45C, Mollie reached the Geographic South Pole having skied alone for 58 days and across 702 miles with only a 105kg sled for company – the equivalent weight of an international rugby player.
This was Mollie’s second world record breaking achievement, as in May 2017 (aged 26) she became the youngest woman in the world – and the first English woman – to summit Mount Everest from both the north and south sides.
On 1 December 2020, Mollie was elected as the President of Scouts Scotland, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
