Industry Update: Glasgow Science Centre creates the formula for staff wellbeing and is awarded a Wellness Charter
Hospitality Health, the Scottish charity dedicated to improving health and wellbeing in the hospitality & tourism industry, has awarded its prized Wellness Charter to Glasgow Science Centre, the first Glasgow visitor attraction to receive the award!
The charity was founded in 2018 with a mission to change the way the industry thinks about mental health. Its Wellness Charter award recognises businesses which are putting the right steps and mechanisms in place to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of their staff.
The Hospitality and Tourism sectors have sometimes been associated with unsociable hours and pressures on work-life balance and Hospitality Heath believes that recognising and understanding emotions of staff is essential for employers to better look after their team.
The charity seeks to provide employers with the tools and skills to bring about positive change by putting support in place to help staff experiencing mental ill health, by providing access to assistance and by challenging any associated stigma.
Speaking at the presentation, Gerry McCann, Customer Service Manager at the Glasgow Science Centre said: “We are delighted to receive the Wellness Charter from Hospitality Health which reflects Glasgow Science Centre’s ongoing commitment to a supportive and inclusive environment where every team member can thrive.
“We believe that by promoting positive mental health and prioritising the wellbeing of our people, this also enhances the experience for our visitors, ensuring they are met with the highest level of service and care from a team that feels supported and valued.
“It was a great to work collaboratively with Hospitality Health and we are thankful for their support in promoting employee wellbeing within the sector.”
Gordon added: “What we are trying to achieve with Hospitality Health is to equip the hospitality & tourism sector with the right tools and mental health first aid training to not only address mental health but to put staff welfare first.
“We launched Hospitality Health in Glasgow 6 years ago with 120 operators in attendance and we have grown considerably, post- pandemic, with a real need for mental health support.”
