The Energy Bill Relief Scheme, introduced by the government in October 2022 to support non-domestic energy customers, will end on the 31st March 2023. The new Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS) will be introduced on the 1st April 2023 for 12 months, but there’s concern the new scheme doesn’t go far enough to support businesses. Utility consultancy firm, eyebright, is urging business decision-makers to take action and speak to their utility consultant sooner rather than later to begin sourcing a new deal. A fixed rate contract offers budget security in an unpredictable market and can empower organisations to make informed decisions about how their business will operate for the next 12 months.
Our own research found that 56% of members were out of contract with their energy supplier and it’s believed many businesses are hesitant to enquire about new deals because prices had risen. Over the past 3 months the price per kilowatt of electricity has halved (to roughly 35 pence), but at its height some businesses were being quoted as much as £1/kWh. This decline in costs, coupled with government support, could be advantageous and offer security for non-domestic organisations worried about energy bills.
